Sunrise on the Reaping, Suzanne Collins prequel novel and its upcoming film adaptation, rewinds the clock fifty years before Katniss Everdeen, to the Quarter Quell that made Haymitch Abernathy the bitter, brilliant mentor fans met in the original trilogy.

Set during the 50th Hunger Games, the story follows a teenage Haymitch as he is forced into an arena with double the usual tributes, alongside his girlfriend Lenore Dove Baird, a folk singer with a rebellious streak, and fellow District 12 tribute Maysilee Donner, sharp, guarded, and determined to survive on her own terms.

What makes this entry hit so hard is knowing exactly where Haymitch ends up, alone, drinking, mentoring future tributes he cannot always save. Sunrise on the Reaping fills in the tragedy behind that bitterness, and gives a young Effie Trinket her own complicated introduction to the Capitol machine long before she ever meets Katniss.
