Learn More About Fear Street
Fear Street is a trilogy of horror films released on Netflix in July 2021, directed by Leigh Janiak and based on the long-running teen horror book series by R.L. Stine, the author best known for Goosebumps. The three movies, Fear Street Part One: 1994, Part Two: 1978, and Part Three: 1666, came out on consecutive Fridays, July 2, July 9, and July 16, 2021, turning the release into a weekly event. Netflix took over distribution after the original studio plans fell through.
The story centers on Shadyside, a small town nicknamed the murder capital of the United States, and its wealthy neighbor Sunnyvale, which has enjoyed decades of peace. Locals blame the curse of Sarah Fier, a woman executed for witchcraft in 1666. In Part One, set in 1994, a mall massacre sets off a chain of events in which Deena, played by Kiana Madeira, her brother Josh (Benjamin Flores Jr.), her ex Sam (Olivia Scott Welch), and their friends Kate and Simon find themselves hunted by killers from Shadyside history.
The first film is a love letter to 1990s slashers. If you enjoy that style, our Which Scream Character Are You? quiz explores the franchise that helped define it. Fear Street Part One also leans on a nostalgic soundtrack and mall setting, and its mix of humor, gore, and genuine emotion made it a hit with viewers who grew up on paperback horror.
Part Two jumps back to 1978 and Camp Nightwing, where Shadyside and Sunnyvale campers compete in an annual Color War. Sadie Sink plays teenage Ziggy Berman and Emily Rudd plays her older sister Cindy, with Gillian Jacobs playing the adult C. Berman, who survived the massacre and helps Deena in 1994. Summer camp slasher fans may also enjoy the supernatural small-town chills of Yellowjackets, where survival and secrets collide.
Part Three travels all the way back to 1666, with the main cast returning in new roles. Kiana Madeira plays Sarah Fier, Olivia Scott Welch plays Hannah Miller, and Ashley Zukerman plays Solomon Goode, whose actions are tied to the origin of the curse. The story reveals that the Goode family prospered while Shadyside suffered, which is why Ashley Zukerman, who plays Sheriff Nick Goode in the 1994 timeline, ends up so central to the finale. A mid-credits scene hints that the story is not entirely over.
One reason the trilogy stands out is its heart. Deena and Sam are a queer couple at the center of a mainstream horror franchise, and the films treat their relationship as the emotional engine of the story rather than a side note. Fans of ensemble teen horror with supernatural stakes might also like Stranger Things or the darker comedy of Wednesday.
The trilogy also fits perfectly into October viewing, alongside other creepy favorites.
