Kimberly J. Brown plays Marnie, with Judith Hoag as her protective mother Gwen and the late Debbie Reynolds as her warm, wonderfully eccentric grandmother Aggie Cromwell. Together with Marnie’s siblings Dylan and Sophie, they uncover a conspiracy that threatens the whole town, and the film’s mix of cozy family drama and light spookiness is a big reason it has lasted.

Much of the movie’s charm comes from its world. Halloweentown is a place where taxi drivers are skeletons, shops are full of spell ingredients, and the monsters are more likely to be friendly than frightening. The villain, the warlock Kalabar, gives the story its edge.
