Learn More About The Cat in the Hat
Dr. Seuss’ most famous troublemaker is back on the big screen. The Cat in the Hat is a brand-new computer-animated film from Warner Bros. Pictures Animation and Dr. Seuss Enterprises, opening in theaters and IMAX across North America on November 6, 2026. It is the third screen version of the 1957 picture book, following the 1971 TV special and the 2003 live-action movie, and the first fully animated feature take on the story.
Bill Hader voices the Cat, and this version gives him a surprising backstory: he works for the I.I.I.I. — the Institute for the Institution of Imagination and Inspiration — an agency that sends imaginative agents to help kids who have lost their spark. The trouble is that the Cat has a long track record of botched assignments, and he is down to his last chance before he loses his job, his stripes and his famous hat.
That final assignment brings him to Gabby (Xochitl Gomez) and her younger brother Sebastian (Tiago Martinez), two siblings miserable about moving to a new town. When the Cat hands them a gadget that could undo the move, things spiral fast, and a mysterious creature known as The Something snatches it into another world. What starts as a rainy-day visit turns into a full-blown multiverse-scale adventure.
The supporting cast is stacked with comedy talent. Matt Berry voices Waffles, this film’s take on the book’s famously disapproving goldfish, while Quinta Brunson plays Sherri, the I.I.I.I.’s HR director and the closest thing the Cat has to a friend at work. Giancarlo Esposito is Mr. Hoogeboom, the Cat’s boss, America Ferrera voices the kids’ mom Carmen, and Bowen Yang, Paula Pell and Tituss Burgess round things out.
The film is written and directed by Erica Rivinoja and Alessandro Carloni. Rivinoja makes her feature directing debut here, while Carloni previously co-directed Kung Fu Panda 3. The project has been a long time coming: an animated Cat in the Hat was first announced more than a decade ago before moving to Warner Bros., and its release date shifted several times before settling on November 2026.
Our quiz matches you with one of five characters: the chaos-loving Cat, guarded big sister Gabby, curious and tender-hearted Sebastian, rule-keeping Sherri, or Waffles, the forever-unimpressed goldfish. There are no wrong answers — though Waffles might disagree.
