Which Despicable Me Character Are You?

Learn More About Despicable Me

Despicable Me started in 2010 as a small, odd idea about a grumpy supervillain who adopts three little girls to help him pull off the heist of the century, and it grew into one of the biggest animated franchises in the world. Illumination has since released Despicable Me 2, Minions, Despicable Me 3, Minions: The Rise of Gru and Despicable Me 4, and the franchise keeps finding new audiences as families return to it on streaming and as the Minions branch out into new projects like Which Minions & Monsters Character Are You?.

The heart of the story is Gru, voiced by Steve Carell with that unforgettable accent. He begins as a self-obsessed villain who wants to steal the moon, but three orphaned sisters, Margo, Edith and Agnes, slowly turn him into a devoted dad. The girls are such a good ensemble because each one has a clear personality: Margo is the responsible oldest sister, Edith is the sarcastic troublemaker, and Agnes is the sweet, fluffy-loving youngest whose enthusiasm melts everyone around her.

Lucy Wilde, introduced in the second film and voiced by Kristen Wiig, brings another flavor. She is a fearless secret agent with a sense of humor, and she becomes Gru’s partner both on missions and in life. Meanwhile, Dr. Nefario, voiced by Russell Brand, supplies the gadget genius and the dry, absent-minded charm that rounds out Gru’s home base.

Of course, you cannot talk about this franchise without mentioning the Minions. Pierre Coffin created and voices the little yellow henchmen, whose mix of nonsense language and pure slapstick turned them into a global phenomenon that practically has its own pop culture orbit. They are a different flavor of chaos from the monsters in Which Monsters, Inc. Character Are You? or the fairy-tale zaniness of Which Shrek Character Are You?, but they share that same universal appeal.

Underneath the gags, the movies are really about found family and the idea that nobody is too difficult to love. Gru is gruff, prickly and a little ridiculous, but he becomes a better version of himself through the people around him. That emotional through-line is the reason adults who grew up with the first film still enjoy it, and the reason it lands in the same warm space as Which Zootopia 2 Character Are You?.
