The Goosebumps television series that streams on Disney+ and Hulu is a very different beast from the anthology show many fans remember from the 1990s. Based on the R.L. Stine book series, it was developed by Rob Letterman and Nicholas Stoller, with Hilary Winston serving as showrunner. Instead of telling a fresh self-contained story each week, it commits to serialized storytelling, following one group of teenagers through a season-long mystery while still sprinkling in classic Goosebumps monsters and cursed objects along the way.

Season one premiered on October 13, 2023, and ran ten episodes through November 17. It centers on five high school students who investigate the 1993 death of Harold Biddle, a teen who died in a house fire. As they dig, they uncover dark secrets from their parents’ past. A Polaroid camera that reveals future events becomes a key piece of the puzzle, and the new English teacher, Mr. Bratt, inherits the Biddle House and ends up possessed by Harold’s spirit. Justin Long plays Nathan Bratt, and Chris Geere appears as Slappy the Dummy, one of the franchise’s most famous villains.

The teen ensemble is the heart of the show. Zack Morris plays Isaiah Howard, a quarterback whose seemingly perfect life fractures after the group finds a yearbook photo of Harold Biddle. Isa Briones plays Margot Stokes, who recognizes her father Colin, played by Rob Huebel, in camcorder footage of a ritual. Miles McKenna plays James Etten, who learns his mother held the candle that trapped Biddle’s spirit, while Will Price plays Lucas Parker, a reckless daredevil who idolizes his late father. Ana Yi Puig rounds out the group as Isabella Chen-Lopez, whose drone becomes the center of a feud with Lucas. Rachael Harris and Lexa Doig also appear in the adult cast.

What makes the characters work is that each one is tied to a parent with something to hide. Lucas eats a worm and ends up unable to feel pain, a storyline that plays on one of the classic Goosebumps monsters, and the teens eventually use a scrapbook to see the past and witness their parents committing a murder. That mix of high school drama, family secrets and old-school creature-feature scares gives the quiz its natural personality split: are you the investigator, the golden boy, the daredevil, the techie or the loyal friend?

A second season, Goosebumps: The Vanishing, arrived on January 10, 2025 with eight episodes and an entirely new cast of characters. Twins Cece and Devin visit their father in Brooklyn and enter a supposedly haunted fort with friends, which leads them to a mystery tied to the disappearance of four teenagers roughly thirty years earlier. David Schwimmer stars as Anthony Brewer alongside Ana Ortiz, Jayden Bartels, Sam McCarthy, Elijah M. Cooper, Francesca Noel and Galilea La Salvia. Producers have said they were interested in adapting elements of the Night of the Living Dummy books for that season.

The series was renewed in February 2024 but was canceled by Disney+ in August 2025 after two seasons. It still earned 19 Children’s and Family Emmy Award nominations across both seasons, a sign of how well the mix of scares and teen drama landed with audiences. For many fans, the first season in particular is a perfect October binge, especially if you grew up on the books and want a modern, mystery-driven take on them.
