Undead Unluck is a shonen manga by Yoshifumi Tozuka, serialized in Weekly Shonen Jump since January 2020, and adapted into an anime by David Production in 2023. The rules are strict, the interactions between powers are worked out with real rigor, and fights are frequently won by someone correctly reasoning about the exact wording of an ability rather than by overwhelming force.

That puzzle-box quality is the series signature. Readers who enjoy power systems with hard internal logic tend to get very invested, because Tozuka plays fair. Setups planted early pay off dozens of chapters later. The series also commits to a loop-and-reset structure that lets it revisit its own history from new angles, which is unusual for Jump and gives the back half of the story a density most shonen never attempt.

The supporting cast grows fast. Shen Xiang brings a cool, analytical counterweight to Andy chaos. Tatiana is aggressively competitive and one of the most entertaining additions to the roster. Gina Chamber handles the organizational side of the Union with a seriousness the job actually requires. Each new Negator arrives with a power that reframes what the rules can do.

The David Production anime, from the studio behind JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure, brought a bright, kinetic visual style and a strong sense of comic timing to the adaptation. It is a good entry point, though the manga remains well ahead of it and is where the most ambitious storytelling lives.

Within current Jump output it occupies a distinctive niche. It is funnier than most of its shelf-mates, structurally stranger, and unafraid to be sincerely romantic. Readers coming from Black Clover will recognize the escalating-stakes shonen engine, while those who liked the character-first warmth of Blue Box will find the Fuuko and Andy relationship does a lot of similar work. Fans of high-concept supernatural shonen like Psyren will feel right at home with the rules-lawyering.
