Chae-ni's ragtag circle includes Son Kyung-hoon (Choi Dae-hoon) and Kang Ro-bin (Im Seong-jae), two friends who are just as baffled by their new abilities as anyone would reasonably be. Underneath the comedy sits a darker thread: Son Hyun-joo's Ha Won-do, a doctor secretly leading the "Wunderkinder Project," an illegal experiment that used orphaned children to try to engineer superpowered people on purpose. That backstory reframes the whole comedic premise — the powers Chae-ni and her friends gained by accident are the same thing someone else spent years trying, and failing, to manufacture deliberately.

The WONDERfools has drawn comparisons to Western superhero deconstructions for the way it refuses to let its characters become instantly competent once they gain abilities, but its real hook is squarely Korean rom-com and comedy DNA: messy friendships, family obligation, and a love story that develops sideways while everyone is too busy panicking about their new powers to notice.
