Special Ops: Lioness follows the CIA's real-world Lioness program, which embeds female officers undercover inside terrorist and cartel networks most male operatives could never infiltrate. Season 3 pushes creator Taylor Sheridan's gritty, morally murky world further, following Joe (Zoe Saldana) as she runs a new crop of recruits through missions that blur the line between protecting the country and destroying everyone she loves in the process.

Joe is the show's emotional center, a woman who is terrifyingly effective at her job precisely because she's willing to sacrifice almost anything to do it well. Then there's the home front. Kyle, Joe's husband, spends the show holding together a marriage with someone who legally isn't allowed to tell him what she does for a living. It's one of the more understated but devastating threads in the series, the cost of this work on the people who never signed up for it.

Byron, meanwhile, plays the politics of it all: budgets, oversight, career survival inside an intelligence community that rewards results and punishes almost everything else. His scenes are a reminder that the war rooms are just as dangerous as the field, in their own way.
