Sunny Dancer follows Ivy, played by Bella Ramsey, a 17-year-old who has beaten cancer and wants nothing more than to leave that entire chapter behind her. Instead, her parents send her to a summer camp for teenagers who've been through cancer in their own lives — a place Ivy immediately, dismissively nicknames "chemo camp."

Writer-director George Jaques built the film specifically to avoid the tone audiences might expect from that premise.
