Overlord began as a web novel by Kugane Maruyama in 2010, moved to light novels with illustrations by so-bin in 2012, and became one of the defining isekai franchises of the last decade largely by inverting the genre’s central promise. Most stories about being transported into a game world are power fantasies about becoming a hero. Overlord is a power fantasy about becoming the final boss — and then discovering you are not sure you mind.

The setup is precise. The DMMORPG Yggdrasil is shutting down, and a player called Momonga sits alone in his guild’s tomb waiting for the servers to die. They do not. He wakes as his own avatar — an overpowered skeletal sorcerer — permanently inside a world that now behaves as though it is real, surrounded by guild NPCs who have become sentient and regard him as a god. He takes the guild’s name, Ainz Ooal Gown, and starts improvising.

What makes the series genuinely unusual is how honestly it handles his moral drift. Ainz is scrupulously kind to the inhabitants of Nazarick and casually catastrophic toward everyone outside it. He is not a villain who revels; he is a mid-level office worker who keeps making expedient decisions while performing omniscience for an audience that will believe anything he says. Madhouse’s adaptation leans into the comedy of that gap — the internal monologue of a man bluffing his way through godhood — without ever letting the body count become a joke.

The Floor Guardians are the reason the series has the fandom it does. Albedo, the Overseer, combines terrifying competence with an all-consuming and entirely one-sided devotion to Ainz. Demiurge is the architect of the cruelest plans in the story and delivers them with the enthusiasm of a man solving a pleasant puzzle. Shalltear Bloodfallen, the true vampire, is volatile, childlike and one of the most powerful entities in Nazarick. Aura Bella Fiora, one of the dark elf twins on the sixth floor, brings a brash, energetic normality that throws everything around her into relief.

Structurally, the anime ran four seasons across 2015, 2018, 2018 and 2022, followed by the feature film Overlord: The Sacred Kingdom in 2024, which adapted one of the light novels’ bleakest arcs. Notably, a fifth season has not been officially announced despite persistent online claims to the contrary — the realistic explanation being source material. Maruyama has confirmed the light novels will conclude with Volume 18, and Volume 17 is only arriving in September 2026, which makes waiting the sensible production decision.

That pending ending gives the franchise an unusual amount of current energy. After sixteen years, readers are genuinely close to finding out whether Ainz’s arc resolves as conquest, tragedy, or something stranger — and whether the series ever asks him to reckon with what he has done. The fandom’s theories about the final two volumes are, at this point, a hobby in their own right.

So the character question here is really a question about power. Ainz wields it while impersonating certainty. Albedo channels it entirely through devotion. Demiurge treats it as an intellectual exercise. Shalltear uses it on impulse. Aura simply has it and would rather be outside doing something. Five genuinely different relationships with being far stronger than everyone in the room.
