Colleen Hoover's Verity was already a phenomenon years before Amazon MGM Studios ever bought the rights. The novel xe2x80x94 first self-published in 2018 and later picked up by Grand Central Publishing xe2x80x94 built its readership almost entirely through word of mouth and BookTok, where readers obsessively debated its final twist and argued over what Verity Crawford's chilling, unfinished autobiography really revealed about her. It's a different flavor of Hoover than the romance-forward It Ends With Us: darker, twistier, and closer to a full-blown psychological thriller than a love story.

The film adaptation, directed by Michael Showalter (The Big Sick) from a script by Nick Antosca, finally arrives in theaters on October 2, 2026, after an earlier May release date was pushed back. It stars Dakota Johnson as Lowen Ashleigh, a struggling novelist who is hired to complete the remaining books in Verity Crawford's bestselling series after Verity is left incapacitated by a car accident. Anne Hathaway takes on the title role, playing sharply against her usual warmth to embody an author whose outward composure hides something far more unsettling.

Lowen relocates to the remote Crawford estate to work through Verity's notes and outlines, and is drawn deeper into the household by Verity's husband, Jeremy (Josh Hartnett) xe2x80x94 grieving, magnetic, and clearly hiding his own version of the truth. It's there that Lowen finds what appears to be Verity's private, half-finished memoir: a manuscript full of disturbing confessions that reframes everything Lowen thought she knew about the family she's living with, including the deaths that haunt the Crawford household.

What makes Verity so unnerving xe2x80x94 and so debated online xe2x80x94 is that the manuscript itself can't be trusted. Is it a genuine confession, a manipulation aimed squarely at Lowen, or something in between? Hoover never fully resolves the question on the page, and that ambiguity is a big part of why the book still gets passed around years after publication. The film leans into that same uncertainty, letting Hathaway play Verity as someone who might be a monster, a victim, or an extremely gifted unreliable narrator xe2x80x94 possibly all three.

The supporting cast fills out the Crawford household with more quiet tension. Brady Wagner plays Crew, the couple's young son, whose presence is a constant, watchful reminder of everything the family has lost. Ismael Cruz Cxc3xb3rdova plays Corey, a new addition to the story who circles the edges of the Crawford estate with motives of his own xe2x80x94 one of a handful of changes the adaptation makes to sharpen the story for the screen.

This marks the second Colleen Hoover adaptation to hit theaters after 2024's It Ends With Us, and the third Hoover story Amazon has had a hand in bringing to life, following the author's history of self-publishing through Kindle Direct Publishing. If the pattern holds, expect Verity to spark the same kind of heated post-viewing debates the book has generated for years xe2x80x94 particularly around its final pages, which the film reportedly handles with its own twist on the ending.
