Ironheart arrived on Disney+ in 2025 as the first Marvel series to put its hero back in a real American city and leave her there. Dominique Thorne plays Riri Williams, the MIT prodigy introduced in Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, who returns to Chicago after being expelled and has to figure out how to fund a suit of powered armor without a Stark-sized bank account behind her. The answer she lands on is the engine of the whole show: she takes a job with people she should not be working for.

That single choice is what separates the series from the rest of the MCU’s armored-hero stories. Tony Stark built his suits with a fortune and a factory. Riri builds hers with scavenged parts, borrowed lab time, and money that comes with obligations attached. The show is honest about the difference, and it uses that gap to ask a question Marvel usually skips: what does a genius do when brilliance alone is not enough to pay for the thing she is brilliant at?

The other half of the series is grief. Riri lost her stepfather and her best friend, Natalie Washington, in a shooting years before the show begins, and she has never processed either. Lyric Ross plays Natalie, who returns in a form Riri did not entirely intend to create — an artificial intelligence built from old data that looks, sounds and argues like the friend she lost. It is the most emotionally loaded idea in the show, and the series is smart enough to treat it as a haunting rather than a gift.

Anthony Ramos plays Parker Robbins, known as the Hood, and the casting is the show’s sharpest move. Ramos gives him warmth and a salesman’s charm, which makes the character far more unsettling than a straightforwardly menacing crime boss would have been. Parker recruits Riri the way good recruiters work everywhere: by seeing exactly what she needs and offering it before she has to ask. His cloak carries something older and considerably worse than technology, and the series uses him to walk the MCU toward genuine magic-versus-machinery territory.

Alden Ehrenreich rounds out the triangle as Ezekiel Stane, operating under the alias Joe McGillicuddy — the son of Obadiah Stane, and therefore an inheritance the franchise has been sitting on since the first Iron Man. Where Parker is appetite, Zeke is patience. Anji White plays Riri’s mother, Ronnie Williams, who functions as the show’s gravity: the person who has already survived the worst thing and still gets up to make breakfast.

Created by Chinaka Hodge and released as a six-episode run, the series was shot largely on location, and Chicago is doing real work rather than standing in for a generic metropolis. The soundtrack, the neighborhoods, and the specific texture of a young Black engineer being treated as suspicious in spaces she has earned her way into all give the show a grounded quality that the more cosmic corners of the MCU cannot reach.

Reaction was genuinely split, which is usually a sign a show tried something. Some viewers wanted a straightforward armored-hero adventure and got a character study about debt, grief and compromise instead. Others argued that is precisely why it is one of the more interesting things Marvel Television has made. The finale’s late swerve into the supernatural, and the identity of who is actually behind the Hood’s power, reframed the whole series and set up threads the studio has been clearly enjoying.
