Learn More About Beef
Beef is an anthology series on Netflix created by Lee Sung Jin. Each season follows a different set of characters whose lives collide after one small act of aggression snowballs into something much bigger. The first season premiered on Netflix on April 6, 2023, after a debut at the SXSW festival in March of that year, and ran for ten episodes.
Season 1 begins with a road rage incident in a parking lot. Danny Cho, a struggling contractor played by Steven Yeun, and Amy Lau, a small business owner played by Ali Wong, are pulled into an escalating feud. Around them are Amy's stay-at-home husband George Nakai, played by Joseph Lee, and Danny's younger brother Paul Cho, played by Young Mazino. Danny's cousin Isaac, played by David Choe, and Maria Bello's Jordan, the wealthy buyer of Amy's business, round out the cast.
The first season was a major awards-season force. It won eight Primetime Emmy Awards, including Outstanding Limited or Anthology Series, with lead acting wins for both Steven Yeun and Ali Wong. It also swept its Golden Globe categories and took home the Critics' Choice award for Best Limited Series, which cemented its reputation as one of the most talked-about shows of 2023.
Season 2 premiered on April 16, 2026, with eight episodes and an entirely new cast. The story moves to the Monte Vista Point Country Club. Oscar Isaac plays Joshua Martín, the club's general manager, and Carey Mulligan plays his wife, Lindsay Crane-Martín. Cailee Spaeny and Charles Melton play Ashley Miller and Austin Davis, a young couple working in the orbit of the club, while Youn Yuh-jung appears as Chairwoman Park, the billionaire who takes over ownership.
What makes the show click is how it treats anger. Instead of a villain and a hero, it gives us ordinary people who are tired, overextended, and wounded in ways they cannot say out loud. Small slights stand in for bigger fears about status, money, family, and belonging, and the series keeps asking how far someone will go to feel that they won.
That mix of dark comedy, class tension, and uncomfortable honesty puts Beef in good company with other character-driven hits. If you enjoy morally messy casts, you might also like our Succession character quiz, the White Lotus character quiz, and the Ozark character quiz.

The series also earns attention for its grounded details. Characters argue about money, loyalty, and respect in ways that feel uncomfortably familiar, and the humor often lands right next to the pain. Lee Sung Jin has described the show as inspired by a real road rage incident in his own life, which helps explain why even the smallest moment of friction in Beef feels so charged with meaning.
