Netflix's adaptation of Neil Gaiman's landmark comic series follows Dream (also called Morpheus), the anthropomorphic embodiment of dreams and nightmares, after nearly a century of imprisonment. Freed and weakened, he sets out to reclaim his lost tools of power while discovering just how much the Dreaming, and the waking world, changed without him. What makes the show resonate is how it treats its cosmic premise with total sincerity: siblings called the Endless (Death, Desire, Despair, Destiny, Delirium, and the absent Destruction) each embody a facet of existence, and their family dynamics carry as much weight as any nightmare escaping into reality.

Tom Sturridge anchors the series as a Dream who is genuinely alien, more myth than man, which makes his rare moments of vulnerability land hard. Kirby Howell-Baptiste's Death, by contrast, is the show's emotional center: cheerful, patient, and the only member of the family who seems to have made peace with what she is. Between them sit characters like Lucienne, the unflappable librarian who has run the Dreaming for a century without complaint, and the Corinthian, a nightmare who slipped his leash and developed a taste for waking-world mayhem.

The show also spends real time on humanity's side of the equation, from Rose Walker's search for her missing brother to the quietly devastating story of a man who imprisons Dream in the first place and lives to regret it across decades. That patience, letting a single choice echo for a hundred years, is very on-brand for a story about the being who literally represents dreams themselves.
