Which The Last Kingdom Character Are You?

Learn More About The Last Kingdom

The Last Kingdom began in 2015 on BBC Two before moving to Netflix, running for five seasons and a feature-length film, Seven Kings Must Die. Based on Bernard Cornwell's Saxon Stories novels, the series follows Uhtred of Bebbanburg, a Saxon nobleman raised by Danes, as he navigates the wars that shaped early England in the ninth and tenth centuries.

Alexander Dreymon leads the cast as Uhtred, a warrior who always says that destiny is all. Caught between his Saxon birth and Danish upbringing, he fights for both sides at different times, always chasing the dream of reclaiming his ancestral home. His journey stretches decades and gives the series its epic scope.

David Dawson's portrayal of King Alfred is one of the most acclaimed performances of the show. Alfred is physically frail yet intellectually brilliant, and his determination to unite the English kingdoms drives much of the plot. Millie Brady's Æthelflæd begins as his daughter, forced into a marriage she does not want, and grows into one of the most powerful women in the series, eventually ruling Mercia in her own right.

Fans also adore the supporting cast. Mark Rowley's Finan brings humor and heart, Emily Cox's Brida adds fire and complexity, and Arnas Fedaravicius's Sihtric offers loyalty that grows over time. Their friendships give the battle scenes emotional weight, because viewers care about who survives.

The production is known for its gritty realism, with muddy shield walls, flickering torchlight, and brutal hand-to-hand combat. Yet it is also a story about identity, loyalty, and what it means to belong to a place. By the final season, the series builds toward the creation of England itself, turning individual stories into national history.
