Learn More About Gotham

Gotham premiered on Fox in September 2014 and ran for five seasons, reimagining the world of Batman before the cape and cowl ever existed. Created by Bruno Heller, the series follows a young Detective James Gordon in a corrupt, decaying city, while a teenage Bruce Wayne struggles to make sense of his parents' murder. It was a bold swing: a Batman story without Batman, told through the people who would eventually become his allies and enemies.

Ben McKenzie plays Gordon as an earnest outsider, determined to clean up a police force that is more criminal than the criminals. His partner, Harvey Bullock, played by Donal Logue, is the weary cynic who gradually learns that doing the right thing still matters. Together they navigate a city run by mob families, with Carmine Falcone and Fish Mooney pulling strings from behind the scenes.

The show quickly became known for its villains, and none stood out more than Robin Lord Taylor's Oswald Cobblepot. Starting as Fish Mooney's umbrella-carrying lackey, Oswald climbs the ranks with ruthless charm and a distinctive waddle, eventually becoming the Penguin and one of the most compelling characters in the series. Cory Michael Smith's Edward Nygma follows a similar arc, evolving from an awkward forensic scientist into the Riddler.

Young Bruce and Selina, played by David Mazouz and Camren Bicondova, carry the emotional through-line of the series. Their friendship develops over five seasons, with Selina becoming a street-smart thief and Bruce slowly training himself into the vigilante he is destined to be. Fans loved watching the origins of familiar characters like Barbara Kean, Jerome Valeska, and Alfred Pennyworth, played by Sean Pertwee, who gives the butler a fierce, protective edge.

Gotham embraced its comic-book roots with a gothic visual style, operatic performances, and a willingness to be weird. Some seasons leaned into grim crime drama, while others leaned into campy supervillain chaos, and part of the fun was never knowing which tone the next episode would take. By the final season, set years into the future in a devastated city, the series delivered a satisfying origin for the Dark Knight himself.
