Which ParaNorman Character Are You?

Learn More About ParaNorman

ParaNorman is a 2012 stop-motion animated horror comedy from Laika, the studio behind Coraline and Kubo and the Two Strings. Directed by Chris Butler and Sam Fell, it follows a boy named Norman Babcock who can see and speak with the dead.

Norman lives in Blithe Hollow, a town that has built its identity around a 300-year-old witch trial. When a curse begins to bring the dead back to life, Norman is the only one who can stop it. Kodi Smit-McPhee voices Norman, with Tucker Albrizzi as his loyal friend Neil, Anna Kendrick as his sister Courtney, and Christopher Mintz-Plasse as the bully Alvin.

Every frame of the film was handmade, with thousands of puppets, props, and facial expressions created for the animation. Laika also pioneered the use of 3D printing for the characters’ faces, allowing for incredibly expressive performances. The result is a film that feels tactile and richly detailed.

Under the horror-comedy surface, ParaNorman is a story about empathy and the harm done by fear and prejudice. The film’s climax reframes the villain, challenging the idea that the scariest things are always the ones we think they are.

It earned an Academy Award nomination for Best Animated Feature and has since become a cult favorite, especially around Halloween. Its mix of zombies, witches, and heartfelt storytelling has influenced the way people think about family-friendly horror.
