Learn More About American Horror Story: 13
After twelve seasons of murder houses, freak shows, hotels, and apocalypses, FX is finally sending American Horror Story back to where its modern identity really took shape: Miss Robichaux’s Academy for Exceptional Young Ladies. Season 13, simply titled “13,” premieres September 24, 2026, and creator Ryan Murphy has billed it as an all-star crossover rather than a straightforward Coven sequel — a thank-you to the fans that pulls characters and imagery from across the anthology’s history into one supersized event.
The season rebuilt the Robichaux’s Academy set from scratch, and Sarah Paulson returns as Cordelia Goode, the reigning Supreme first introduced in 2013’s Coven. Paulson is reportedly playing as many as six roles across the season’s runtime, while franchise mainstay Evan Peters takes on five, and Jessica Lange reprises all four of her previous AHS characters. That kind of doubling and tripling up is very on-brand for a series that has always treated its repertory cast as a living company of actors rather than one-and-done guest stars.
Angela Bassett returns as Marie Laveau, the New Orleans Voodoo Queen whose rivalry with the witches of Robichaux’s Academy was one of Coven’s most memorable threads. Emma Roberts is back as Madison Montgomery, the self-absorbed former teen star turned powerful witch, and the marketing has leaned hard into imagery referencing the murder house, the freak show’s traveling tents, the Hotel Cortez, and the show’s apocalyptic seventh season, suggesting this really is meant to feel like a victory lap through thirteen years of AHS lore.
Coven itself, back in 2013, followed a secret school for witches in New Orleans locked in a decades-old power struggle with a coven of Voodoo practitioners, all while the witches waited to find out which of them would become the next Supreme. That premise — mixed with the show’s trademark camp, gore, and soapy melodrama — turned it into one of the most beloved seasons in the anthology, so revisiting it for a franchise-wide celebration is a fairly safe bet for FX.
Beyond the returning cast, the new season has also brought in high-profile names like Ariana Grande, joining a roster that already includes Kathy Bates, Billie Lourd, Gabourey Sidibe, Leslie Grossman, and Frances Conroy, who came out of acting retirement specifically to reprise her Coven role as Myrtle Snow for a cameo. Filmmaker John Waters is also attached in some capacity, which only adds to the sense that this season is being treated as an event rather than a normal seasonal reset.
Whichever legend you match with, the appeal of AHS: 13 is really about the tension between chaos and control — something every one of these characters embodies in a different way. Cordelia leads through steadiness, Fiona through fear, Marie through legacy, Madison through sheer nerve, and James Patrick March through obsessive precision. That range is exactly why the show has stayed fascinating across thirteen seasons: there is no single right way to survive an American Horror Story.
