Learn More About Below

Below is Netflix’s six-episode creature thriller set in Snook’s Arm, a small fishing town in Newfoundland, Canada, where an unidentified sea creature has started terrorizing the community. All six episodes landed on October 8, 2026, and the series has been sitting near the very top of the Netflix charts ever since, which makes it one of the buzziest binges of the month.

At the center is Calvin Penney, played by Josh Hartnett: a stubborn but big-hearted bayman and single father of three who is still haunted by his own father’s mysterious death decades earlier. When the town starts to panic, Calvin ends up as its reluctant anchor, and he teams up with a visiting marine researcher, Fonda Howander, played by Mackenzie Davis, to figure out what is actually lurking in the water. Charlie Heaton plays Calvin’s son Wade, while Willow Kean, Ruby Stokes and Rohan Campbell round out the Penney family.

The show was created and run by Jesse McKeown, a writer whose credits include The Umbrella Academy, and it blends local myth, suspense and a surprising amount of humor. If you liked the slow-burn dread of small-town survival stories, you may also enjoy Which Mayor of Kingstown Character Are You? or Which Umbrella Academy Character Are You?, both of which also build their drama around tight-knit communities under pressure.

One of the most talked-about details is the accent. The series was filmed on location in Newfoundland, and Hartnett and Heaton worked with a dialect coach to develop the regional way of speaking, which has Irish and English roots and is one of the most distinctive dialects in North America. That commitment to place gives the show a texture that a generic coastal setting would never have.

Fishing communities in Newfoundland have a long, complicated history with the sea. The collapse of the cod fishery in the early 1990s reshaped entire towns, and stories about the ocean giving and taking away are baked into local folklore. Below taps into that tradition, treating its monster as both a literal threat and a symbol of everything a small town fears it cannot control.

That is also why the ensemble works so well as a personality test. You have the burdened leader, the curious outsider with a scientist’s mind, the restless son, and the younger Penneys who each handle fear in their own way. Some people are the rock everyone leans on, some are the brain, and some would rather face the danger head-on than wait for permission.

Whether you would be the one calming the whole harbor or the one asking the uncomfortable questions, this quiz sorts you into one of the five Below characters based on how you handle pressure, loyalty and the unknown.
