Which Ice Age Character Are You?

Learn More About Ice Age

The Ice Age franchise is back in the spotlight, with several of its movies showing up in Netflix’s weekly Top 10 and a whole new wave of viewers discovering (or rewatching) the herd. Blue Sky Studios released the first film in 2002, and the series has since grown into five theatrical movies, from The Meltdown in 2006 and Dawn of the Dinosaurs in 2009 to Continental Drift in 2012 and Collision Course in 2016, plus the Disney+ spinoff The Ice Age Adventures of Buck Wild.

What makes the franchise so durable is its found-family core. Manny, a gruff woolly mammoth who has lost almost everything, ends up traveling with Sid, a chatty and endlessly unlucky ground sloth, and Diego, a saber-toothed tiger who starts out as an enemy and slowly becomes the herd’s fiercest protector. Later films add Ellie, a mammoth who thinks she is a possum, and her adoptive brothers Crash and Eddie, while Scrat’s never-ending quest for one acorn keeps the slapstick going in the background of every movie.

The voice cast helped make these characters feel like old friends. Ray Romano voices Manny, John Leguizamo plays Sid, Denis Leary is Diego, Queen Latifah joins as Ellie from the second film on, and Scrat’s squeaks and screams come from director Chris Wedge. Simon Pegg later brought the wild, one-eyed weasel Buck to life, adding a manic explorer energy to the herd.

Personality-wise, the characters map onto surprisingly relatable types. Manny is the protective, slightly grumpy leader who hides a huge heart. Sid is the loyal goofball who will talk his way into trouble and then somehow talk the herd out of it. Diego is the cool-headed fighter who would never admit how much he cares. Ellie is the confident optimist who pulls everybody together, and Scrat is pure chaotic obsession.

The franchise also tackles real feelings under all the jokes: grief, belonging, parenthood, and the fear of being left behind as the world changes. That emotional layer is why adults who grew up with the first movie are now watching it with their own kids, the same way families return to Which Shrek Character Are You?, Which Kung Fu Panda Character Are You? and Which Zootopia 2 Character Are You?.
