Director Simon McQuoid returns for this sequel to 2021's Mortal Kombat, once again adapting Capcom rival Midway/NetherRealm's legendary fighting game franchise for the screen. Mortal Kombat II expands the roster significantly, bringing in Karl Urban as the washed-up Hollywood action star Johnny Cage, who gets recruited into Earthrealm's fight against Shao Kahn's forces alongside returning favorites like Liu Kang, Sonya Blade, and Scorpion.

The film leans further into the games' iconic character designs than its predecessor, with first-look images showing Adeline Rudolph's Kitana wielding her signature bladed steel fans and Martyn Ford's towering, armored take on the emperor Shao Kahn. Hiroyuki Sanada returns as Hanzo Hasashi, better known to fans as the vengeful ninja Scorpion, alongside Joe Taslim reprising Bi-Han.

Mortal Kombat II released in theaters on May 8, 2026, arriving as the franchise's live-action side continues to grow alongside its long-running video game series. The trailer's red-band cut broke viewership records within its first day, a sign of how much appetite there is for the franchise's signature blend of martial arts and over-the-top violence.
