Lanterns is HBO's entry into the rebooted DC Universe, created by Chris Mundy (True Detective: Night Country), Damon Lindelof (Watchmen), and comics writer Tom King. Rather than a cosmic space opera, the show is pitched by DC Studios co-CEO James Gunn as a grounded, small-town murder mystery in the vein of True Detective — with two Green Lanterns investigating a case that turns out to be much bigger than it first appears.

Kyle Chandler stars as Hal Jordan, the weathered, veteran test-pilot-turned-space-cop, opposite Aaron Pierre as John Stewart, the disciplined ex-Marine and architect stepping into the Corps for the first time. The mismatched pairing lets the show dig into two very different ideas of what being a Green Lantern actually means, backed by a stacked supporting cast including Kelly Macdonald, Laura Linney, and Nathan Fillion as fellow ring-bearer Guy Gardner.

Lanterns premieres August 16, 2026 on HBO and HBO Max, arriving as one of the tentpole titles in the Gunn/Safran DCU's opening slate, Chapter 1: Gods and Monsters. It joins Superman (2025) and other early DCU titles in building out a shared universe that spans both film and prestige television.
