East of Eden is a seven-episode limited series on Netflix, adapted from John Steinbeck's 1952 novel. The project was developed by Zoe Kazan, who serves as co-showrunner with Jeb Stuart, and it has quickly become one of the most-watched shows on the service. Filming took place in New Zealand, in Auckland, Dunedin and Oamaru, from October 2024 through March 2025. Florence Pugh stars as Cathy Ames, the series' central antihero. Cathy answers to no one, which makes her the most unsettling presence in the story and the one viewers cannot stop discussing.

Christopher Abbott plays Adam Trask, a morose Army veteran who falls for Cathy and later moves to California. Abbott has described Adam as a man who has lived many different lives and changed his personality throughout them. Mike Faist plays Adam's brother Charles, who remains on the family farm and whom Faist has called a deeply conflicted man dealing with inner demons and trauma.

Hoon Lee plays Lee, the Trask family manservant who conceals a brilliant intellect. Lee has noted that the role offers an interesting contrast, because the character initially appears one-dimensional before revealing real depth and humanity. Many readers of the novel consider Lee its moral compass, and the series gives the character room to show why.

The next generation is played by Joseph Zada as Caleb, known as Cal, and Joe Anders as his twin brother Aron. Cal struggles with the family legacy and with his mother's absence, while Aron is the lighter counterpart. The supporting cast includes Tracy Letts as Cyrus Trask, Martha Plimpton as Faye and Ciarán Hinds as Samuel Hamilton.

Part of the series' appeal is how each character answers the same pressure differently. Some Trasks run toward a new life, some dig in and defend the old one, and others quietly watch and understand more than they let on.
