He believes in fairness, hard work, and modernizing the estate, and his romance with Mary becomes the emotional backbone of the early seasons. Matthew never fully abandons his principles even as he’s absorbed into the aristocracy, which is exactly why the family comes to respect him.

Downstairs, Mr. Carson serves as the butler and moral center of the household staff. Carson is old-fashioned to a fault, deeply protective of Downton’s reputation, and fiercely loyal to the family he serves, especially Lady Mary, whom he has known since she was a child. His scenes with housekeeper Mrs. Hughes are some of the show’s quiet emotional highlights.

And then there is Violet, the Dowager Countess of Grantham, played memorably by Maggie Smith. Violet delivers most of the show’s best one-liners, but underneath the wit is a woman who has spent her entire life defending a way of life she knows, deep down, cannot last forever. She is stubborn, hilarious, and far more adaptable than she ever lets on.
