Kazuki Takahashi began Yu-Gi-Oh! in Weekly Shonen Jump in 1996, and the original premise had very little to do with trading cards. It was an anthology about a shy boy who solved an ancient Egyptian puzzle and became host to a vengeful spirit that challenged bullies to deadly games a different game every week, most of them improvised, with the losers punished in creative and often disturbing ways. Cards were one idea among many. They just happened to be the one that worked.

The card game, initially called Magic and Wizards, took over the manga within a couple of years and then took over the world. Konamis real-world Yu-Gi-Oh! Trading Card Game launched in 1999 and has since sold more than thirty-five billion cards, holding a Guinness World Record as the best-selling trading card game of all time. Very few pieces of fiction have generated a real product that outgrew them so completely.

The 2000 anime, known internationally as Duel Monsters, is the version most people mean. Yugi Muto is a small, kind, easily-bullied teenager whose defining trait is an almost stubborn faith in other people. The spirit sharing his body Yami Yugi, later revealed as the Pharaoh Atem is everything Yugi is not: commanding, ruthless, and slowly learning restraint from the boy he inhabits. The relationship between them is the emotional engine of the whole series, and the ending, in which one of them has to let the other go, still holds up.

Seto Kaiba is the reason the show has staying power. A teenage corporate CEO with a private jet, a Blue-Eyes White Dragon obsession, and a rivalry that has clearly become the organising principle of his life, he is both genuinely menacing and extremely funny frequently in the same scene. His arc from outright villain to grudging ally never fully completes, which is exactly right. Joey Wheeler, meanwhile, gets the underdog story: a former bully who becomes the groups most improbable duelist, playing for his sisters sake and losing just often enough to keep the stakes real. Tea Gardner holds the friendship theme, which the show commits to with a sincerity that is unfashionable now and was unfashionable then.

Maximillion Pegasus, the games creator, is the first major antagonist and remains the most tragic a man whose entire empire is an elaborate attempt to reverse one death. The Duelist Kingdom arc he presides over set the template every subsequent arc followed.

The franchise has since spawned GX, 5Ds, Zexal, Arc-V, VRAINS, and Sevens, each rebuilding the game with new mechanics for a new generation. But the original remains the cultural touchstone: the shouting, the dramatic card reveals, the friendship speeches, the willingness to treat a card game as a matter of life and death. Takahashi died in 2022, and the outpouring made clear just how many people had grown up inside his story.
