Inside Apple's For All Mankind Spinoff, Star City

Star City takes the alternate-history space race of For All Mankind and flips the lens, following the Soviet side of the program from inside the walled, closely surveilled town of Star City itself. Rather than triumphant liftoffs, the show is more interested in the cost of ambition under a regime built on secrecy, tracking a covert Soviet mission to Venus and the people forced to make it happen no matter what it costs them personally.

At the center is Rhys Ifans as the Chief Designer, based on real-life Soviet engineer Sergei Korolev, the visionary driving the program forward through sheer will and no small amount of ruthlessness. Alice Englert plays Anastasia Belikova, an untested cosmonaut thrown into a mission she isn't sure she's ready for, while Niamh Algar's Yana Akhmatova brings the opposite energy, outspoken and utterly certain of her own place in the program.

Watching over everyone is the KGB's surveillance apparatus, led by Anna Maxwell Martin's Lyudmilla Raskova and her newest recruit, Agnes O'Casey's Irina Morozova, who spends the season caught between doing her job and reckoning with what she's actually watching happen to the people around her. It's a much colder, more paranoid show than its predecessor, and that tension between duty and conscience runs through nearly every character.
