Which Sons of Anarchy Character Are You?

Learn More About Sons of Anarchy

Sons of Anarchy is the FX drama created by Kurt Sutter that ran for seven seasons from 2008 to 2014. It follows a California motorcycle club, the Sons of Anarchy Motorcycle Club, Redwood Original, usually shortened to SAMCRO, in the fictional town of Charming. The show blends family melodrama with crime and loyalty, and it quickly built a devoted following.

At its center is Jax Teller, played by Charlie Hunnam, the club's vice president who begins to question the path his late father set out. Katey Sagal plays Gemma, his mother, in one of the series' most acclaimed performances, and Ron Perlman plays Clay Morrow, the club's president and Gemma's husband. Their tangled relationships drive the story as much as any rival gang.

The supporting cast gave the show much of its personality. Kim Coates is memorable as Tig, whose intensity and dark sense of humor made him a fan favorite, while Ryan Hurst plays Opie, Jax's oldest friend, whose arc is among the most emotional on the show. Mark Boone Junior and Tommy Flanagan add to an ensemble where nobody feels like a background character.

The series is often compared to Shakespeare's Hamlet, and creator Kurt Sutter has talked about that influence. You can see it in the themes of a son uncovering uncomfortable truths about his parents and the people who raised him, and in the way loyalty and betrayal keep colliding. That tragic structure helps explain why the story hits so hard.

Sons of Anarchy also left a large footprint on television. It spawned a spin-off, Mayans M.C., set in the same universe, and it helped establish FX as a home for character-driven crime drama. Fans still revisit it for its soundtrack, which often used covers of classic songs to underline big dramatic moments.
