Which Monster House Character Are You?

Learn More About Monster House

Monster House is a 2006 animated horror comedy directed by Gil Kenan and produced by Robert Zemeckis and Steven Spielberg. It was made using performance-capture animation, giving the characters a distinctive, slightly uncanny look that fit its spooky story perfectly.

The film follows twelve-year-old DJ Walters, who becomes convinced that the house across the street is alive. Its owner, the grumpy Horace Nebbercracker, seems to be hiding something, and when DJ’s best friend Chowder and a determined girl named Jenny join him, they set out to prove that the house is a monster.

The voice cast includes Mitchel Musso as DJ, Sam Lerner as Chowder, and Spencer Locke as Jenny, with Steve Buscemi voicing Nebbercracker and Maggie Gyllenhaal as the babysitter Zee. Kevin James and Jon Heder also lend their voices, rounding out a cast that balances scares with heart.

What sets Monster House apart is its emotional core. Beneath the haunted-house thrills, the story is about fear, grief, and the way misunderstood people can be mistaken for monsters. The reveal behind the house and its owner gives the film a surprising amount of warmth.

The movie earned an Academy Award nomination for Best Animated Feature, and it has become a seasonal favorite for families who want something a bit spookier than the usual Halloween fare without being too intense for younger viewers.
