Grand Blue is the diving anime that barely features any diving. Iori Kitahara moves to a seaside town expecting a peaceful college life focused on scuba diving, and instead gets adopted by his uncle dive shop crew, a group of loud, shirtless, perpetually drunk upperclassmen who treat every gathering as an excuse for chaos.

The show has become a cult favorite for its unhinged party-comedy energy, anchored by Kohei Imamura, the human hurricane who never says no to a bad idea, and grounded by Chisa Kotegawa, the one person on campus with any sense of restraint. Aina and Azusa round out the friend group with sweetness and secondhand embarrassment respectively.

With a third season keeping the franchise momentum going, new fans keep discovering just how far a group of college friends will go for a good story to tell later. It is slapstick, it is ridiculous, and somehow it still finds room for real friendship underneath all the noise.
