Fire Force began as a Weekly Shonen Magazine serial by Atsushi Ohkubo in 2015, six years after he finished Soul Eater, and it carries a lot of that earlier series DNA: a distinctive, slightly off-kilter art style, a world built on one bizarre premise taken completely seriously, and a cast that is funnier than the setting suggests. The premise is that humans have begun spontaneously combusting into violent creatures called Infernals, and specialised fire brigades part firefighter, part exorcist, part special forces are the only thing standing between the public and that phenomenon.

Shinra Kusakabe joins Special Fire Force Company 8 with a nervous tic that pulls his mouth into a grin at exactly the wrong moments, which earned him the nickname Devil Footprints as a child and a lifetime of being assumed guilty. He is a third-generation pyrokinetic who ignites his feet, and he became a firefighter because he intends to be a hero a word he uses without irony, and one the series keeps testing. The mystery of the fire that killed his mother and supposedly his infant brother drives the whole plot.

Company 8 is what makes the show work day to day. Captain Akitaru Obi has no pyrokinetic ability at all and leads a squad of people who do, compensating with sheer physical training and an unshakeable sense of responsibility. Maki Oze, a former military officer, is comfortably the most dangerous member of the team and spends most of her screen time being underestimated by men she could throw across a room. Arthur Boyle, Shinras childhood rival, has convinced himself he is a knight and operates entirely inside that fiction, which is both the shows best running joke and, occasionally, a genuine tactical advantage. Iris, a sister of the Holy Sol Temple, carries the quiet moral weight.

David Productions the studio behind JoJos Bizarre Adventure animated the series, and the visual signature is unmistakable: exaggerated perspective, heavy use of negative space, and fire animated with real texture rather than as a generic effect. The first season aired in 2019, the second in 2020, and the long-awaited third season arrived in 2025, adapting the manga toward its conclusion. Ohkubo finished the manga in 2022 at 34 volumes.

What elevates Fire Force above its shonen peers is how seriously it takes the firefighting part. The Infernals are people, and the brigades job is described as putting them to rest rather than killing them; there are prayers, there are grieving families, there is paperwork. The comedy is broad and sometimes very broad, but the underlying idea that the job is a service to the dead and the people they leave behind never gets dropped.

The world-building also gets genuinely strange in the best way. What starts as a monster-of-the-week procedural becomes a conspiracy about the church, the empire, and the nature of the great cataclysm itself, and it connects to Ohkubos earlier work in ways longtime readers spent years theorising about before they were confirmed.
