Learn More About Dept. Q
Dept. Q, adapted from Jussi Adler-Olsen's bestselling Danish crime novels and relocated to Edinburgh for this Netflix version, follows DCI Carl Morck, a brilliant but deeply abrasive detective exiled to a forgotten basement unit after a shooting leaves his partner paralyzed and a colleague dead. Rather than fade into irrelevance, Morck turns the newly created cold case division, Department Q, into a vehicle for solving the crimes everyone else gave up on, dragging a ragtag team of misfits along with him whether they like it or not.
The show gets a lot of its tension from the friction inside that basement team: Morck's new partner Akram brings a quiet, methodical competence that keeps operations running, while Rose, a traumatized former officer reassigned to admin duties, turns out to have sharper instincts than anyone expected. Meanwhile Morck's former partner James Hardy, left paralyzed by the same incident that got Morck exiled, becomes an unlikely emotional anchor for the season even from a hospital bed.
Structurally, Dept. Q balances a slow-burn present-day case, the years-old disappearance of a prosecutor, with flashbacks that gradually reveal exactly what happened the day Morck's career and his partner's body were both shattered. It is a classic prestige crime drama formula, damaged detective, cold case, unresolved guilt, but the Edinburgh setting and the specific chemistry of its basement-dwelling team give it its own identity.
