Dept. Q balances a slow-burn present-day case, the years-old disappearance of a prosecutor, with flashbacks that gradually reveal exactly what happened the day Morck's career and his partner's body were both shattered. It is a classic prestige crime drama formula, damaged detective, cold case, unresolved guilt, but the Edinburgh setting and the specific chemistry of its basement-dwelling team give it its own identity.
