Charmed premiered on The WB in October 1998 and ran for eight seasons, which made it — at the time it ended — the longest-running hour-long television series with an all-female lead cast in American history. Constance M. Burge’s show about three sisters who discover they are the most powerful witches of their generation became a defining piece of late-nineties supernatural television, and it has found an entirely new audience on streaming.

The setup is elegantly simple. Prue, Piper, and Phoebe Halliwell inherit their grandmother’s San Francisco manor and, with it, the Book of Shadows. Reading from it activates the Power of Three: Prue can move objects with her mind, Piper can freeze time, and Phoebe receives premonitions. The powers map neatly onto the sisters’ temperaments — the eldest forces the world to move, the middle one stops it to buy everyone a second, and the youngest sees what is coming and cannot stop it.

What distinguished Charmed from its contemporaries was its domesticity. The demons of the week were frequently less interesting than the arguments about whose turn it was to do the dishes, and the show knew it. Its real subject was sisterhood as an obligation you did not choose — three adult women forced to share a house, a destiny, and a great deal of unresolved family history. The magic was largely a delivery system for that.

The series survived a change most shows would not. When Shannen Doherty departed after season three, Prue was killed off and the show introduced Paige Matthews, a half-sister nobody knew existed, restoring the Power of Three. Paige arrived as an outsider with something to prove, and the arc of her earning a place in a family that had already been formed gave the later seasons a genuine emotional spine.

Cole Turner, meanwhile, remains one of television’s more interesting attempts at a redemption arc — a half-demon assassin sent to destroy the sisters who falls in love with Phoebe instead, and who spends several seasons being pulled between two natures without the show ever fully resolving which one won. The relationship is messy, occasionally alarming, and far more complicated than the genre usually allowed.

The show’s aesthetic — Victorian manor, crystals, bell sleeves, a soundtrack of alt-rock needle drops — has come back around completely, and a new generation has found it through clips and streaming binges. Its legacy is visible in almost every supernatural drama built around found or given family since, and the Book of Shadows remains one of the most recognisable props in television.
