Paru Itagaki-s Beastars is one of the strangest premises in modern manga executed with total sincerity: a boarding school where carnivores and herbivores live together under a fragile social contract, and where the murder of an alpaca in the first chapter cracks that contract wide open. Studio Orange adapted it into a CGI anime that ran from 2019 to 2021, with a final season arriving on Netflix in 2025 to close out the story. What could easily have been a gimmick instead became one of the most thoughtful things anime has done with allegory in years.

The central conceit is that predation is both a literal biological fact and a stand-in for every appetite society asks people to suppress. Carnivores are taught from childhood that their instincts are shameful. Herbivores live with a background hum of fear they are not supposed to mention. The black market where carnivores buy meat from a body-parts trade is horrifying and also unmistakably an addiction story. The show never spells any of this out, which is exactly why it works.

Legoshi is a grey wolf who has spent his entire life making himself smaller. Enormous, physically overwhelming, and pathologically gentle, he stage-crews for the drama club rather than performing and apologizes for existing roughly once a scene. His arc is the spine of the series: learning that suppressing his nature and controlling it are not the same thing, and that being genuinely good requires effort rather than avoidance. He is one of the great anxious protagonists.

Haru is a dwarf rabbit who has responded to a lifetime of being treated as fragile by refusing the role entirely. She is blunt, sexually forthright in a way that scandalizes the school, and completely uninterested in being anyone-s symbol of vulnerability. The relationship between her and Legoshi is genuinely difficult — he has to reckon with the fact that his protectiveness and his predatory instinct come from the same place, and she has to decide whether she can trust that.

Louis is the red deer who was raised in the black market and bought his way into an elite life, and he carries that origin like a blade he keeps hidden. Ambitious, controlled, and privately terrified, he is competing not for status but for proof that he is not what he was born to be. His friendship-rivalry with Legoshi is the most complicated relationship in the series, and the season where he becomes a gang leader is a genuinely audacious swerve.

Juno, a grey wolf who arrives determined to succeed where Legoshi is content to hide, functions as his mirror — same species, opposite strategy. She is unapologetic about ambition and openly frustrated by his self-effacement. Jack, a labrador and Legoshi-s oldest friend, is the quiet emotional anchor: unfailingly loyal, cheerful on the surface, and carrying more than he shows.
