Learn More About Stress Response Styles
When stress hits, the body reacts faster than the mind can think. Psychologists describe this as the fight, flight, freeze, and fawn responses, automatic survival patterns wired into the nervous system long before conscious thought kicks in.
Some people respond to stress by confronting it head on, others by physically or emotionally distancing themselves. Freezing looks like going still or blank under pressure, while fawning involves smoothing over conflict to keep everyone else calm, often at real personal cost.
A fifth pattern, sometimes called flow, describes people who have learned to stay grounded and adapt to stress without being overtaken by it. None of these responses are a choice in the moment, they are automatic, but recognizing your pattern can help you work with it more intentionally over time.
