Tougen Anki began as a manga by Yuki Kamiya, serialized in Shueisha's Weekly Shonen Jump lineup, before making the jump to a full anime adaptation that quickly built a following for its blend of delinquent-brawler energy and supernatural bloodline mythology. The premise starts small and personal: an ordinary, none-too-studious teenager gets swept into a world of hidden power he never asked for, and has to figure out who he can trust while he's still figuring out what he's actually capable of.

That teenager is Shiki Ichinose, a middle-school dropout more interested in causing trouble than sitting through class xe2x80x94 until an attack from a supernatural threat called a Momotaro reveals that Shiki is secretly an Oni, one of a hidden bloodline whose members carry immense power at a steep cost: pushed too far, an Oni risks losing control entirely and entering a berserk state. That revelation pulls Shiki into Rasetsu Academy, a school that exists specifically to train Oni to control their abilities before those abilities control them.

Rasetsu Academy gives the series its ensemble cast, and much of the show's appeal comes from how differently each classmate handles the same impossible situation. Jin Kougasaki, always seen behind a black mask, treats nearly everything as a fight worth having and butts heads with Shiki constantly. Homare Byoubugaura runs hot xe2x80x94 short-tempered and quick to throw a punch xe2x80x94 but has a surprisingly soft, sentimental streak when it comes to the people he actually cares about. Kuina Sazanami is small and easily overlooked, the kind of classmate who blends into the background right up until she doesn't. And Ikari Yaoroshi plays the part of the composed, model student almost too well, which is exactly what makes him hard to fully trust.

The anime's first season introduced this world and its central conflict, establishing Rasetsu Academy's rules and the uneasy balance Oni have to maintain to stay in control of their own power. The upcoming second season, subtitled the "Nikko Kegon Falls Arc," is set to premiere on Nippon TV in October 2026, picking up the story with the cast pushed into a new, higher-stakes setting xe2x80x94 the kind of arc that shonen fans tend to point to as the moment a series levels up.

Like a lot of the genre's best entries, Tougen Anki is really a story about found family disguised as a story about superpowers xe2x80x94 a group of misfits who don't especially like each other at first, forced to rely on one another anyway. That tension between individual recklessness and group loyalty is what gives the show its emotional core underneath all the fighting.
