Which The Maze Runner Character Are You?

Learn More About The Maze Runner

The Maze Runner arrived in theaters in 2014 and became one of the best-known young adult dystopian film series of its era. Based on James Dashner's novels and directed by Wes Ball, it follows a group of teens trapped in a sprawling maze with no memory of how they arrived. The mix of mystery, survival, and friendship made it a hit with audiences who loved the YA adventure wave.

The story begins when Thomas, played by Dylan O'Brien, wakes in an elevator rising to a grassy clearing known as the Glade. A community of boys has built a society there, with rules, jobs, and a deadly maze that changes every night. Thomas immediately starts asking questions, and his curiosity pushes the group toward answers they have been afraid to seek.

Thomas Brodie-Sangster plays Newt, the compassionate second-in-command who holds the Gladers together. Ki Hong Lee plays Minho, the confident leader of the Runners, whose job is to map the maze. Will Poulter plays Gally, a harsh and conflicted figure who believes strict rules are the only way to survive. Kaya Scodelario plays Teresa, the only girl to arrive in the Glade and a pivotal figure in the larger mystery.

The sequels, The Scorch Trials and The Death Cure, expand the world beyond the maze. They introduce the organization known as WICKED and a virus called the Flare, turning the story into a larger dystopian saga. Along the way the characters face betrayals, impossible choices, and emotional losses that fans still talk about today.

Part of the appeal is how well the series captures the bond among the Gladers. Even in the most dangerous moments, the story returns to loyalty, trust, and the cost of survival. Characters like Newt have become fan favorites because of how openly they care about their friends.

The films also have a distinct visual style, with towering stone walls, deadly Grievers, and a sense of constant tension. The soundtrack and production design helped the first film stand out in a crowded field of YA adaptations.
