Learn More About Moon Knight
Moon Knight arrived on Disney+ in 2022 as one of the stranger and more personal entries in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Instead of a flashy team-up, the series followed one man whose mind and life were split between multiple identities, and it used that premise to tell a tense, funny, and surprisingly emotional story set around Egyptian mythology.
Oscar Isaac stars as Steven Grant, a soft-spoken gift shop employee in London who suffers from blackouts and lost time. Before long we learn that Steven shares a body with Marc Spector, a hardened mercenary, and that both men are tied to Khonshu, the Egyptian god of the moon. A third persona, Jake Lockley, is hinted at as well. Isaac plays the shifting identities with a total commitment that gave the show much of its charm.
The villain is Arthur Harrow, played by Ethan Hawke. Harrow is a former avatar of Khonshu who now serves the goddess Ammit, and he plans to judge people before they commit any wrongs. What makes him compelling is how gentle and reasonable he sounds while describing something terrifying. He is a cult leader who believes he is doing good, which makes his scenes memorable.
Layla El-Faouly, played by May Calamawy, is the other emotional anchor. An archaeologist and Marc's wife, she is every bit as capable as the heroes around her and eventually steps into her own powerful role as the Scarlet Scarab. Her mix of humor, courage, and frustration with Marc's secrets gives the series its human center.
Khonshu himself, voiced by F. Murray Abraham, is a scene stealer. He is imperious, theatrical, and demanding, but he also has a strange dependence on the men he commands. Their relationship is part partnership and part toxic roommate arrangement, and it leads to some of the funniest and most uncomfortable moments in the season.
The show also works because it takes its themes seriously. Dissociative identity and trauma sit at the center of the story, and the finale leans into the idea that healing means letting every part of yourself have a voice. Fans praised the series for treating those ideas with care while still delivering monsters, chases, and spectacle across Cairo and the Egyptian desert.
