Which Fresh Prince of Bel-Air Character Are You?

Learn More About The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air

The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air is one of the most beloved sitcoms of all time. Premiering on NBC in September 1990, it follows a street-smart teenager from West Philadelphia who is sent to live with his wealthy aunt and uncle in Bel-Air, California, after getting into trouble at home. The clash between his easygoing attitude and the Banks family's polished lifestyle powers six seasons of laughs and surprisingly heartfelt moments.

Will Smith stars as a fictionalized version of himself, in the role that turned him into a household name. His chemistry with the cast is the show's greatest strength: James Avery's stern but loving Uncle Phil, Janet Hubert and later Daphne Maxwell Reid as Aunt Vivian, Alfonso Ribeiro as the preppy and beloved Carlton, Karyn Parsons as the glamorous Hilary, Tatyana Ali as the sweet Ashley, and Joseph Marcell as the dry-witted butler Geoffrey.

Beyond the comedy, the show was known for confronting serious subjects with honesty. The famous episode where Will's father abandons him again remains one of the most powerful moments in sitcom history, and the series tackled race, class, gun violence and identity in ways that still resonate. It gave audiences laughs and a heart at the same time.

Its pop culture footprint is huge. The theme song is instantly recognizable, the Carlton dance is a meme, and the show's fashion helped define 90s style. It has been endlessly rerun, has inspired a dramatic reimagining called Bel-Air, and continues to find new fans with each generation.

Each character represents a different relationship to family, status and ambition, which is why personality quizzes work so well here. Will's humor, Carlton's earnest enthusiasm, Hilary's flair, Philip's authority and Ashley's creative spirit all show up in people we know, or in ourselves.
