Casper is a 1995 fantasy comedy directed by Brad Silberling that brought the classic cartoon ghost to the big screen. Combining live action with groundbreaking computer-generated characters, the film was a major hit and remains a cozy favorite for spooky season.

The story follows Kat Harvey, played by Christina Ricci, and her widowed father Dr. James Harvey, played by Bill Pullman. Dr. Harvey is a paranormal therapist hired to rid Whipstaff Manor of its ghostly residents, only for Kat to befriend the lonely young ghost Casper, who just wants someone to talk to.

Cathy Moriarty plays the scheming heiress Carrigan Crittenden, with Eric Idle as her sidekick Dibs. The mischievous Ghostly Trio, Stretch, Stinkie, and Fatso, are Casper’s rowdy uncles, and they provide much of the film’s comedy as they scare, tease, and ultimately protect their nephew.

At the time, Casper was notable for being the first feature film to have a computer-generated character in a leading role. Its visual effects were praised for giving Casper and the ghosts real personality and emotion.

Beyond the effects, the film is about grief, friendship, and second chances. Both Kat and Casper have lost people they love, and their bond gives the film its heart. A direct-to-video sequel, Casper: A Spirited Beginning, followed in 1997.
