"And Just Like That..." is HBO Max's continuation of Sex and the City, the era-defining series that followed four New York women through their thirties from 1998 to 2004. The revival premiered in December 2021, picking up nearly two decades later with Carrie, Miranda, and Charlotte now navigating their fifties — careers, marriages, grief, and identity, against the same Manhattan backdrop that made the original iconic.

The show made headlines before it even aired for a jarring creative choice: killing off Carrie's husband, John "Mr. Big" Preston, in the very first episode. After a ride on his Peloton, Big suffers a fatal heart attack and dies in Carrie's arms, instantly reframing the entire revival around Carrie processing sudden widowhood rather than the marriage the original series spent its final act building toward.

Notably absent from the revival was Kim Cattrall's Samantha Jones, who did not return as a series regular amid a long-publicized falling-out with Sarah Jessica Parker, appearing only in a brief, contractually separate cameo during the third season. To fill the gap — and address fair criticism that the original series lacked diversity — the show introduced a new circle of friends: real estate broker Seema Patel (Sarita Choudhury), documentarian and socialite Lisa Todd Wexley (Nicole Ari Parker), and law professor Nya Wallace (Karen Pittman).

Across three seasons, the show tackled subjects the original rarely touched: menopause, grief, gender identity within Charlotte's family, and what it looks like to start over romantically after fifty. Miranda's storyline in particular — leaving her marriage to Steve and exploring her sexuality with comedian Che Diaz — became one of the most talked-about, and divisive, threads of the entire revival.

HBO Max announced in August 2025 that the show would end with its third season, closing the story with a two-part finale. Reactions were mixed, as they had been throughout the revival's run, but the show's cultural footprint was undeniable, keeping the Sex and the City conversation alive for a new generation of viewers.
