What The Dink Is Actually About

The Dink is Apple's summer pickleball comedy, and it's built around a very specific kind of midlife reckoning. Jake Johnson plays Dusty Boyd, a onetime tennis prodigy who never lived up to his early promise and has spent years coaching kids at his father's country club instead. After reinjuring an old wound, Dusty reluctantly pivots to pickleball for rehab, and the movie follows him rediscovering some sense of purpose in a sport everyone else treats as a joke.

Mary Steenburgen plays Candace, Dusty's magnetic new partner on the court, who pulls him into a rivalry that ends up mattering a lot more to him than he expected. Ed Harris plays Chuck, Dusty's father, the club's old-school owner who has never quite let his son forget how far he's fallen short. Rounding out the ensemble are Aaron Chen as PJ and Patton Oswalt as Skip, providing the club's steady stream of comic relief, alongside cameos from real tennis legends Andy Roddick and John McEnroe.

What makes The Dink work, when it works, is the tension between Dusty wanting his father's approval and slowly realizing he might not need it anymore.
