Étoile is a ballet-world dramedy created by Amy Sherman-Palladino and Daniel Palladino, the husband-and-wife duo behind Gilmore Girls and The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel. Premiering on Prime Video in April 2025 with all eight episodes released at once, the series trades Stars Hollow and 1950s stand-up comedy for the high-stakes, high-drama world of professional ballet, following two struggling companies, New York's fictional Metropolitan Ballet and Paris's Le Ballet National, as they attempt a desperate publicity gambit: swapping their biggest stars.

Luke Kirby stars as Jack McMillan, the impulsive, image-obsessed director of the New York company, whose big personality and bigger ideas drive much of the show's chaos. Opposite him, Charlotte Gainsbourg plays Geneviève Lavigne, the sharp and composed interim director of the Paris company, whose icy exterior hides a deep, complicated love for her dancers and her art form. The dynamic between Jack and Geneviève, equal parts rivalry and reluctant respect, anchors much of the series' comedic and dramatic tension.

Lou de Laâge plays Cheyenne Toussaint, the Parisian star sent to New York as part of the exchange, a fiercely talented and famously outspoken dancer with environmental activism on her mind as much as choreography. On the flip side, David Alvarez plays Gael Rodriguez, the ambitious New York dancer whose move to Paris tests his discipline and his sense of identity outside his home company.

Gideon Glick rounds out the principal cast as Tobias Bell, a gifted but anxiety-ridden choreographer whose creative genius is matched only by his neuroses, delivering some of the show's most memorable comic beats. The series is filled out by a colorful supporting ensemble, including real-life ballet talent woven into the cast and cameos, lending the production genuine authenticity in its dance sequences, a hallmark of the Palladinos' famously detail-obsessed, fast-talking writing style.

Critically, Étoile was praised for its visual style, sharp dialogue, and the way it captured the unglamorous, grueling reality behind the elegance of professional ballet, from injuries and burnout to the constant financial precarity facing arts organizations. Despite a loyal fanbase and positive reviews, Prime Video canceled the series after a single season, cutting short what had been announced as a two-season order.

Even as a one-season story, Étoile stands as a distinctive entry in the Palladinos' catalog, swapping their trademark small-town charm and rapid-fire comedy for something glossier and more international, while keeping the whip-smart dialogue and richly drawn ensemble that made their earlier shows into cult classics.
