Netflix's new horror miniseries "Something Very Bad Is Going to Happen" dropped in August 2026 and immediately drew comparisons to "The Haunting of Hill House" for its slow-burn dread and tangled family dynamics. The story centers on Rachel, played by Camila Morrone, who arrives at her fiancé Nicky's family cabin for their wedding only to discover that the Cunningham family is bound by a generations-old curse: she has to marry her soulmate by sundown on her wedding day, or die.

Adam DiMarco plays Nicky, Rachel's kind, sensitive, and emotionally mature fiancé, whose devotion to Rachel is tested the moment his family's secret comes out. Jeff Wilbusch plays Jules, whose marriage to Karla Crome's Nell adds another complicated layer to the family's history with the curse. Nell, as the other relative outsider marrying into the Cunninghams, becomes the kindest presence Rachel encounters all weekend, the one person who understands exactly what it feels like to be thrown into this family's darkest tradition without warning.

Gus Birney plays Portia, the youngest of the Cunningham children, whose spoiled, self-centered streak makes her one of the more chaotic presences at the cabin, someone who treats a life-or-death family curse as just another inconvenience to her weekend. Presiding over the entire family is Jennifer Jason Leigh as Victoria, the matriarch whose calm, controlled exterior hides exactly how far she's willing to go to protect the family's secrets, and its bloodline. Ted Levine plays Boris, rounding out a cast stacked with actors known for finding the unsettling edges in seemingly ordinary family gatherings.

What makes the show work as horror isn't jump scares, it's the slow accumulation of dread as Rachel realizes just how much she doesn't know about the family she's marrying into, and how little time she has to figure it out. The sundown deadline gives every episode a ticking-clock tension that keeps the family's simmering resentments, old wounds, and buried secrets bubbling right up to the surface.

Critics have praised the show's willingness to let its family drama breathe even as the horror elements escalate, treating the Cunninghams' dysfunction as just as frightening as the curse itself. It's a formula that's worked before for prestige horror, and this cast is more than capable of selling both halves of it.

If tense family gatherings and ticking-clock horror are your thing, this one delivers on both fronts. Horror fans should also check out our Which Scream Character Are You? quiz for another dose of dread.
