What's New in House of the Dragon Season 3
House of the Dragon Season 3 picks up the Dance of the Dragons in full, and the biggest change from the books arrives almost immediately: Rhaena Targaryen, not the book's Nettles, is the one who claims the wild dragon Sheepstealer. After discovering the beast terrorizing sheep flocks in the Vale back in Season 2, Rhaena spends the Season 3 premiere slowly winning him over the only way that works on a dragon nobody can tame, by showing up with food, every day, until he lets her ride. It is not a clean claiming. Sheepstealer throws her before he accepts her, and the moment marks a real turning point for a character who spent most of the series without a dragon of her own.
Season 3 also formally introduces Daeron Targaryen, the youngest son of Viserys and Alicent, who has spent the war so far off-page in Oldtown. Daeron is thrown into the Dance alongside his own dragon, Tessarion, forced to grow up fast in a war he did not start. On the Hightower side, two new figures widen out Team Green considerably: Ormund Hightower, the Lord of Oldtown and cousin to Alicent, and Ser Gwayne Hightower, Alicent's brother and a knight increasingly torn between family loyalty and the war he's fighting. Both men represent the Hightower family's military muscle as Aemond tightens his grip on the Iron Throne and Alicent's influence over her own family fades.
What makes this season interesting is how differently each of these characters responds to being handed a fight they didn't necessarily choose. Rhaena finds her power through patience, a quality nobody thought to value in her until it mattered. Daeron is thrown in young and has to prove himself in real time. Ormund leans into duty and ambition in equal measure. Gwayne is the one most visibly wrestling with whether the cause is still worth fighting for. And Sheepstealer, wild and unbothered by any of it, answers to absolutely no one but the person patient enough to earn him.
