When Fox launched Grimsburg in January 2024, the pitch sounded almost too neat: Jon Hamm playing a brilliant, emotionally incompetent detective in an animated town where the murder rate is a running joke. What made it stick was how quickly the show abandoned the easy version of that premise. Marvin Flute is not a parody of a great detective. He is a man who is superb at exactly one thing and is trying, badly and sincerely, to be decent at the rest of his life.

The show comes from Catlan McClelland and Matthew Schlissel, and it leans hard into a specific comic engine: Marvin keeps solving impossible cases while failing at school pickup. Every episode gives him a grotesque, elaborate mystery to unravel, and the mystery is almost never the actual story. The story is that he moved back in with his ex-wife and son and has no idea how to be there.

That family unit is the show real center. Erinn Hayes plays Harmony Flute, Marvin ex-wife and the town news anchor, a character who could easily have been written as an obstacle and instead became one of the sharpest people on the series. Rachel Dratch voices their son Stan, and Dratch performance is a big part of why the show has more heart than its body count suggests. Stan is earnest in a town that punishes earnestness, and the series treats that as a strength rather than a punchline.

Around them, Grimsburg builds out a police department that functions like an ensemble sitcom. Greg Chun plays Lt. John Kang, the long-suffering professional trying to run an actual precinct. Kevin Michael Richardson voices Det. Greg Summers, a cyborg officer whose existence is treated with total casualness. Alan Tudyk plays Dr. Rufis Pentos, Marvin former music teacher turned nemesis, which is a very Grimsburg sentence and a very Grimsburg relationship.

Tonally, the show sits in an interesting spot in the Fox animation lineup. It is darker than The Simpsons and less nihilistic than South Park, and it shares some DNA with live-action family comedies built on a spectacularly dysfunctional household, the way Arrested Development did. The gore is cartoonish and constant; the emotional stakes are surprisingly not.

Fox renewed the series for a third season, with new episodes arriving in the fall of 2026 as part of the network animation block. That is a meaningful vote of confidence for a show that took a while to find its audience. The first season was uneven while it worked out how much sincerity it could carry. The second season figured it out, and the result is a comedy that can do a genuinely affecting scene between a father and son ninety seconds after a dismemberment gag.

The character design helps. Grimsburg itself is drawn as a permanently overcast New England town where every building looks like it has a secret, and the residents are rendered in a slightly rubbery style that lets the show swing between slapstick and unease. It is a place where a talent show can reasonably end in a homicide, and the show never breaks that internal logic.
