Firefly Wedding, known in Japan as Hotaru no Yomeiri, is one of the more unusual romance anime landing this fall: a Meiji-era period drama built around a marriage of convenience that becomes something much more dangerous and much more real. The anime, produced by David Production and directed by Takahiro Kamei, premieres October 9, 2026 on Fuji TV’s prestigious Noitamina programming block before rolling out internationally on streaming.

The story follows Satoko Kirigaya, a countess from a respected noble family who was born with both beauty and intelligence, but also a serious heart condition that has left her with a short declared lifespan and limited ability to leave her own home. Rather than mourn her circumstances, Satoko is determined to secure a marriage that benefits her family before her time runs out, treating her limited future as a reason to act decisively rather than retreat.

That plan is upended when Satoko is targeted by a mysterious attacker and finds herself face to face with Shinpei Goto, a professional assassin who had actually been hired to kill her. In a moment of desperation, Satoko proposes marriage instead, expecting the arrangement to be a convenient lie. Shinpei accepts, and what begins as a business transaction between a target and the man sent to eliminate her slowly, believably curdles into real devotion on both sides.

The family drama surrounding Satoko is just as central to the story as the romance. Her father, Jubei Kirigaya, remarried shortly after the death of his first wife, and his new wife, Rie Kirigaya, made no secret of her dislike for her stepdaughter, a resentment that only deepened after the birth of Satoko’s younger half-sister, Miwako. That tangled, quietly hostile household is part of what makes Satoko’s proposal to Shinpei feel less like a whim and more like an escape hatch from a home that was never really safe for her either.

The manga, created by Tachibana Oreco, was serialized on Shogakukan’s Ura Sunday platform and MangaONE app from January 2023 through February 2026, wrapping up its run right as the anime adaptation was gearing up for release. Oreco is also known for the manga Promise Cinderella, and Firefly Wedding carries a similar blend of historical romance and slow-building suspense, with character designs for the anime handled by Yukiko Aikei, previously known for work on Your Lie in April.
