Dune: Part Three is Denis Villeneuve's long-awaited conclusion to the story he began adapting from Frank Herbert's novels back in 2021. Where Dune (2021) and Dune: Part Two (2024) told the story of Frank Herbert's original Dune novel, Part Three shifts to adapt Dune Messiah, the leaner, darker sequel Herbert wrote as a direct rebuke to readers who mistook Paul Atreides for an uncomplicated hero. Villeneuve has described the whole project as a diptych in spirit, two halves of one long story about what happens when a messiah actually wins.

The film picks up roughly seventeen years after the events of Part Two, with Timothée Chalamet's Paul Atreides now firmly established as Emperor, having unleashed the holy war he spent the previous film trying to avoid. Zendaya returns as Chani, and Javier Bardem reprises his role as Stilgar, the Fremen leader whose devotion to Paul has, in the years since, curdled into something closer to religious worship than friendship. Rebecca Ferguson also returns as Lady Jessica, Paul's mother and a Bene Gesserit Reverend Mother whose political instincts never fully switch off, even when it comes to her own children.

The biggest new addition is Anya Taylor-Joy as Alia Atreides, Paul's younger sister. Alia appeared only briefly in Part Two, in a dream-sequence glimpse of the future, but Part Three finally brings her into the story in full: a young woman whose consciousness was shaped before she was even born, making her simultaneously a child and one of the most formidable people in the empire. Taylor-Joy has spoken about the intensity of playing a character defined almost entirely by her devotion to her brother, calling it the one thing that makes Alia feel like she belongs anywhere.

Florence Pugh returns as Princess Irulan, the emperor's daughter forced into a political marriage with Paul at the end of Part Two. In the books, Irulan is also a historian, chronicling the very events she's trapped inside of, and early looks at Part Three suggest the film leans into that dual role: a woman who is both a prisoner of the plot and one of its sharpest observers. Robert Pattinson joins the cast as Scytale, a shapeshifting Face Dancer working an agenda nobody in the palace fully understands, described by Pattinson as a character whose loyalties are deliberately impossible to pin down.

Jason Momoa also returns in a new capacity after his Part One and Part Two character Duncan Idaho was killed off years earlier in the story's timeline, and the film features first-look casting of Momoa's real-life son Nakoa-Wolf Momoa as Leto II, one of Paul and Chani's twin children. Dune: Part Three is scheduled for release on December 18, 2026, with a screenplay by Villeneuve and Brian K. Vaughan.
