Learn More About Drake

Drake, born Aubrey Drake Graham in Toronto, is one of the most commercially successful artists of his generation. Before music, he was known to television audiences as Jimmy Brooks on the Canadian teen drama Degrassi: The Next Generation. His 2009 mixtape So Far Gone changed everything, blending rapping and singing in a way that would shape the sound of popular music for the next decade.

His catalog is unusually wide, which is why a song quiz works so well. Marvins Room, from the 2011 album Take Care, is the late-night confessional that made vulnerable, in-your-feelings rap a mainstream mode. Started From the Bottom, from 2013's Nothing Was the Same, is the opposite: a triumphant anthem about loyalty and earning your place.

The mid-2010s brought some of his biggest crossover moments. Hotline Bling became a cultural event in 2015, helped by a video whose dance moves launched countless memes. One Dance, from the 2016 album Views, drew on dancehall and Afrobeats influences and became one of the most-streamed songs of its era, topping charts around the world.

God's Plan, released in 2018 and later included on the album Scorpion, showed another side again. Its video famously documented Drake giving away the production budget to people and organizations in Miami, and the song became one of his signature number-one hits. It remains a go-to track for gratitude and good news.

Part of what keeps Drake at the center of pop culture is his range of moods. He can be boastful, wounded, generous and petty, sometimes within the same album, and listeners tend to see themselves in at least one of those modes. He also remains a constant presence on trending charts, with new collaborations regularly rising to the top of search interest.

His influence extends well beyond his own records. The melodic, emotionally open style he popularized is now a default sound in hip-hop and R&B, and his Toronto roots helped put the city on the global music map through his OVO label and festival.
