Boston Blue expands the Blue Bloods universe by picking up Danny Reagan (Donnie Wahlberg) after he leaves New York behind and starts over in Boston with his son Sean (Mika Amonsen). It's a fresh setting for a familiar character, trading the Reagan family dinner table for a new city, a new partner, and a new set of complications.

That new partner is Detective Lena Silver, played by Sonequa Martin-Green, who comes from her own law-enforcement family: District Attorney Mae Silver (Gloria Reuben), Police Superintendent Sarah Silver (Maggie Lawson), rookie cop Jonah Silver (Marcus Scribner), and Rev. Edwin Peters (Ernie Hudson). Pairing Danny's instinct-driven style with a family that runs the city's entire justice system from multiple angles gives the show a different kind of tension than the original series.

The spinoff hasn't cut ties with its roots entirely — Bridget Moynahan appears as Erin Reagan, Danny's sister, and Marisa Ramirez recurs as Maria Baez, his former partner and current girlfriend, keeping a thread back to the original Reagan family even as the show builds out its own Boston-based world.

Season 1 built out Sean's own storyline too, including a recurring arc for Xochitl Gomez as Penny, a charming young woman with a mysterious past who crashes into his life — adding a mystery box to a show that's otherwise rooted in case-of-the-week procedural structure.

Boston Blue was renewed for a second season, premiering October 9 on CBS, a strong sign the spinoff has found its footing as its own show rather than just a Blue Bloods extension.
